Our Interns!
The interns worked 25 hours a week for 6 weeks under the guidance and supervision of our AMAZING NYC Parks Gardener II/ horticulturist, Anil Chandrakumar. Although none of the interns plan on becoming horticulturalists, they all enjoyed working with Anil this summer and each expressed their desire to extend their internships if it were possible.
AstroTurf replacement began!
If you've spent any time in Cadman Plaza Park, you are aware of the capital projects taking place. The north end of Cadman is coming along and last week the AstroTurf replacement began (i'll send you a photo) and is expected to take the next two or three months for completion. In the meantime, the Conservancy is focused on nurturing all of the garden and planted areas surrounding these construction sites. We hope that you will join the Conservancy with one or all of our compost and planting events this fall, and/or create your own gardening circle with family or friends. The Conservancy and NYC Parks Anil Chandrakumar will provide support to individual groups to help with the caretaking of Cadman Plaza Park, Walt Whitman Park and the Korean War Memorial.
DSNY Compost Giveback!
The Cadman Park Conservancy is grateful for the opportunity to host the DSNY Compost Giveback Event in Cadman Plaza Park. All Brooklyn residents are able to secure 2 (40lb) bags of Big Apple Compost! The Conservancy and DSNY is looking forward to your interest in picking up bagged compost from DSNY's Brooklyn Curbside Compost Giveback Series. The Conservancy has hosted annual compost and mulching events that have made a big difference in our garden beds. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity and important resource. If you don't have a garden of your own, you are welcome to join the Conservancy volunteers and distribute with us in our pollinator garden or throughout Cadman Plaza Park!

Food vendor that parks illegally in No Standing zone caught pooping
A handful of food vendors have been parking illegally near the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn side), Causing pollution and unsanitary street conditions.
Brooklyn Bridge Vendors
A proposal for a new rule for vendors on the Brooklyn Bridge and near “No Standing Zones”.
"No Standing Anytime" zone
While our Wednesday morning volunteer gardens have tirelessly cleared and are in the process of beautifying the northeast entrance to the park, a problematic area of concern is the pedestrian entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge, past the northeast entrance to Cadman Plaza Park. The DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance (DNA) successfully worked with Councilmember Lincoln Rester’s office to have DOT “reinstall” the “No Standing Anytime” signage. Yet in over three months of reporting the lack of enforcement to both the NYPD 84th precinct and Councilmember Restler’s office, there continues to be no resolution. The concessions at this site, with motors running, have created a chronic and a potentially extremely dangerous situation. It is illegal for concession trucks to park in a "No Standing Anytime" zone and we expect enforcement at this favorite tourist destination. The Conservancy will advocate that the “No Standing Anytime” signage begins at the beginning of the stone underpass and Cadman Plaza Park ensuring that the northeast entrance to the park and the pedestrian entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge is visible, open, welcoming and accessible.
