Volunteers!

We hope you’re enjoying the beautiful weather and are spending some of your time in the park! The Conservancy was happy to host student volunteers from the Service Collective last Tuesday afternoon. The volunteers planted daffodils along the east fence of the park, along Cadman Park East.  We look forward to seeing the results of their work in the beginning of Spring!  Thank you for planting with us!  We appreciate your help!!

Last Thursday afternoon, student volunteers from St. Francis College joined us for a wonderful afternoon.  It was a gorgeous day. Volunteers planted native perennials in both Juneteenth Grove and along the fenced in area on the northeast side of the park adjacent to the Brooklyn War Memorial.  The weather was spectacular!
Over the summer, our SYEP (student youth employment program) interns planned newly planted areas after researching soil, native plants and their locations under the supervision of NYC Parks and Recreation gardeners: Jessica Kulig and Ketsia Furvilas. Their internships ended in August and it was not the best time to plant their proposed gardens.

London Plane Trees

We’ve had a very hot few weeks and the park is experiencing the effects of the extreme heat. The London Plane trees shed leaves prematurely to conserve water and protect themselves from dehydration. Parks Department employees have been very busy raking the whole park and clearing the leaves from the lawns.
